Wendy Benson visited The Private Hill with her husband recently. Here is what she thought about it….
Having read great things about The Private Hill, my Husband and I decided to give it a try. Unlike myself he’s not a fan of camping, or glamping, so a little gentle persuasion was required.
We booked a weekend and travelled from our home town in County Durham. In no time at all, having left the A1 we were driving down the winding country lanes towards Acklam, North Yorkshire, where The Private Hill is located.
This was a great opportunity to see the Kilburn White Horse, a figure cut into the hillside near the village of Kilburn.
Before long, we arrived at the drive up to The Private Hill where we could see a few other guests were gathered on the decking outside one of the domes. We noticed the hens as we drove up the drive with the thought of freshly gathered eggs for breakfast the following morning – yum!
We were a little apprehensive walking from the car in unfamiliar surroundings and people, but we needn’t have been. Roddy the owner and his wife Jane, made us feel very welcome with their sincere manner. Roddy offered to carry our bags and quickly welcomed us in Jane’s Dome where we enjoyed a chilled glass of bubbles immediately making us feel relaxed and welcome.
After our welcome drink, Roddy then showed us to our Dome. We stayed in the Duchess Dome which Roddy explained was named after one of his prized pedigree Aberdeen Angus Cattle. We certainly weren’t disappointed. The quality was that you would expect in a 5 star Hotel and having worked in several, my expectations are high.
Everything was perfect from the sumptuously comfortable SuperKing bed with luxury sheets and duvets, luxury toiletries and fluffy towels in the en-suite bathroom, to the stocked minibar fridge with locally sourced alcoholic and soft drinks. The Kitchenette area was very well equipped with a Miele Microwave, Nespresso Coffee Machine, Kettle and Toaster, ideal if we had brought our own food to prepare.
After unpacking, we relaxed on the outside decking area and absorbed the views that stretch for miles over the Vale of York whilst enjoying listening to music streamed through the Sonos Music system. The views are simply incredible.
Although at the time of booking we were made aware that we could have ordered one of Roddy’s BBQ Packs which included locally grown steaks, we decided to explore the choice eateries in the local village just a mile or so down the road. We opted for the Jolly Farmer where we enjoyed some delicious food and drinks in what was a lovely typical Yorkshire Pub with lots of local characters. Roddy very kindly offered to collect us which we were most welcome of his generosity.
Upon returning to our luxury dome, we cozied up in front of the wood burning stove and watched the sunset which was beautiful in such calm and peaceful surroundings.
The following morning we ventured over to Jane’s Dome where other Guests were gathered for Breakfast. Once, again the views were incredible. Breakfast had been freshly prepared by Jane and included an excellent selection of local produce and of course, fresh eggs from their home bred free-range chickens!
We really didn’t want to leave and could have quite happily stayed another few nights. Roddy, Jane and their staff are such wonderful genuine hosts, they really do deserve the accolades that they have received having read some of their reviews.
Rather than driving back home straight away, we decided to visit the local market town of Malton where we spent a few hours browsing around the eclectic mix of local shops and cafes, the perfect end to a perfect weekend.
I’m pleased to say that our glamping adventure has changed my Husbands’ perception. I wonder however if we tried anywhere else, whether he might now be disappointed having stayed at what I’m sure is one of the best in the Country !
